LOOKING AFTER OUR MENTAL WELLBEING ON WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

Today, October 10th, marks World Mental Health Day and whether it’s exercise, socialising, or self-care, looking after your mental wellbeing is an essential part of keeping healthy.

It’s important to all of us at Mongoose, although it can be difficult to find the time to prioritise our mental health with a busy client schedule. We asked some of our ‘Geese how they look after their wellbeing within their working day.

Head of PR, Amelie Hawkins likes to get out for fresh air, and try and stay active with a run or a workout during the day. She also makes time for a coffee break when she can’t stare at a screen anymore!

A run is also something Amy Rowe, Head of Digital and Social enjoys, helping to get her creative juices flowing. She also tries to start her day with some morning yoga, and finds listening to podcasts an essential distraction when she needs to step away from work for a bit

CEO Chris O’Donoghue also likes to make time for an hour of exercise a day, which helps him switch off and sweat! This could be anything from spinning, tennis or a lunchtime run, helping him reset for the afternoon.

Senior Account Manager Beki Tovey stresses the need to move, especially when working from home, which can be difficult when you’re sitting down and staring at a laptop all day. Beki tries to go for a walk at lunchtime, even if it’s just for 20 minutes, helping her return to her to-do list feeling refreshed and positive - and her dog enjoys a stretch of the legs too!

Having a work/life balance is key to looking after your mental wellbeing. Emma de Duve, Account Executive always tries to take a full lunchbreak, whether that is using the time to get outside, or just to step away from her laptop for an hour to help her stay motivated. She also reiterates the importance of switching off after the working day, and not checking emails out of hours, helping to keep her mental health strong.

Account Executive Izzy Cocke finds that running clears her head at the end of the working day, or when she leaves the office, to help her completely switch off from those work thoughts.

Kirstyn MacRandal, Head of Integrated Campaigns, likes to work in the office full-time, to allow her to have a separate space for work, away from her home life. Kirstyn also expresses the importance of having a supportive team around you, who allow you to talk about your worries.

Everyone has different ways of looking after their mental wellbeing, there is no right or wrong way to do it. You have to find what works for you, but we all believe at Mongoose that mental health is just as important as physical health, and it should never be taken for granted.
