Why did you want to work at Mongoose?
I’ve been working in sport and fitness PR and marketing for a number of years and have a passion for living an active lifestyle and empowering others to experience the benefits of sport and exercise for themselves. Over the last 18 months we’ve seen the negative impact of the pandemic on elite sport (especially women’s sport!), but research has also shown that people’s appreciation for being outside and being active has increased. I believe we need to capitalise on this and work with organisations and brands to provide opportunities for everyone to find a way of being active that they love. The opportunity to join Mongoose and work with clients who also share this mission was too good to miss!
Tell us a bit more about you, where you have come from and what you studied?
I’ve recently been working at Women in Sport, a charity that believes that sport can truly transform lives and looks at provide impactful solutions to tackling gender inequality and empowering more women and girls to be active. I’ve been part of in-house and agency PR & marketing teams including working for several years in mass participation events, seeing thousands of runners, cyclists and triathletes crossing finish lines with all the associated emotion!
Fun fact – I have a Masters in Marine Geosciences and worked offshore in the North Sea as a Geophysicist for 5 years before I decided PR & Marketing was more my thing.
Where do you consume your news?
Other than the standard BBC News, I also scroll on Instagram (a lot!) and love to read print magazines like Trail, Countryfile, etc for my fix of gorgeous landscapes – especially when we couldn’t travel!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I write a personal blog (www.misswheezy.co.uk) which champions living an active lifestyle as an asthmatic and captures details of my outdoor adventures across cycling, running, hiking, camping and more. My husband, 13-year-old stepdaughter and chocolate Labrador usually accompany me on trips, and we love heading to the Lake District, Peak District, Wales or South Coast for holidays!
I also taught myself how to crochet during lockdown and am currently filling my house with yarn and trying to stop my cat from chasing it!
Favourite sport and team?
I don’t really follow a team as such, but I’m generally interested in running and cycling – we always watch the Tour de France coverage, and I can’t wait for the first Le Tour de France Femmes next year (finally!). The coverage of the Olympics and Paralympics this year was fantastic as well, particularly seeing sports like speed-climbing and skateboarding engaging a whole new generation and opening their eyes to new opportunities.
